What is Base Oil?
Base oil is a lubrication-grade oil used as the foundation for finished lubricants. According to the American Petroleum Institute (API) classification, base oils are grouped into five main categories (API 1509, Appendix E) based on their saturation levels, sulfur content, and viscosity index:
- Group I (Solvent Neutral – SN): Solvent-refined oils with less than 90% saturates, greater than 0.03% sulfur, and a viscosity index of 80 to 120. These are highly cost-effective and widely used in industrial lubricants.
